The Paris Art Center offers a full line of classes and workshops throughout the year. Participants' interests and skill levels may vary from beginner to advanced, and their ages may range from children age 4 through adult.

A Registration Form is available for printout. Please fill out a form for each child and return completed forms to the Bicentennial Art Center, 132 South Central Avenue, Paris, IL 61944, by mail or in person.  Payment must be made at the time of registration.  No registration is complete until all fees are paid.  Payment may be made in cash or by check made payable to:  Paris Art Center.  Registration forms must include the signature of the parent or guardian.  For more information, call the Art Center at 217-466-8130 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or contact the Art Center by e-mail at parisartcenter@frontier.com.  Please have your child wear old clothes or bring a paint shirt to protect their clothing from stains and spills.

1. Learn to Knit       Cancelled                                   Open to All Ages!

      Dates:              Monday thru Friday, June 6 - 10
      Time:               3 - 4pm
      Instructor:        Kari Rajkumar
      Cost:                $22.00 Member/$25.00 Non-Member

      Students will be taught to knit with an easy step-by-step process. Tips on beginning a new project will be given, as well as instructions for casting-on, basic increasing & decreasing, different stitches, and binding-off. Students are required to bring 1 pair of straight knitting needles, between sizes 5 and 10. A selection of yarn will be available; however, if a student has a particular project in mind, they may bring their own yarn. 

2. Photo Walks in Paris - Kids            Cancelled                           Grades 3rd - 8th

       Dates:             Monday thru Friday, June 13 - 17
       Time:              9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

       We'll be exploring Paris with our cameras - looking for textures, patterns, light, shadow, color and composition. Students will learn the technical and artistic aspects of point-and-shoot photography. Come dressed for walking in the heat! Open to all levels of photography experience. Bring your own point-and-shoot digital camera.

3. Photo Walks in Paris - Teens          Cancelled                          Grades 9th - 12th

4. Photo Collage - Kids                     Cancelled                               Grades 3rd - 8th

        Dates:             Monday thru Friday, June 20 - 24

       Students will start the week working with the basic principles of photography while creating a collection of photographs. later in the week, each student will create a photo collage using their own favorite images. Come dressed for walking in the heat! Open to all levels of of photography experience. Bring your point-and-shoot digital camera.

6. Explore and Create                                                     Ages 4 - 7

       This class is for little creative hands! We are going to take each day to explore and imagine through drawing, painting and building. This is a class where nothing but your imagination is required, so come have some fun!

7. Outer Space Extravaganza                                       Ages 4 - 7

       Dates:             Monday thru Thursday, June 27 - 30

This class will be a lot of fun! We will talk about outer space, from aliens to planets, and we will be working on 3 projects. We will make a clay alien, create an outer space painting, and make antennas and glasses!

8. Collage Art                                                                  Grades 1st - 3rd

       Dates:             Monday thru Thursday, June 27 - 30

       In this class, we will be exploring the idea of a collage through the work of various artists. We will create two collage style projects with patterned paper and a lot of imagination.

9. Peace Out                                                                   Grades 2nd - 6th

       Dates:             Monday thru Thursday June 27 - 30

      This class will be all about the peace sign. We will be making art based on the word and symbol of peace. We will be using materials that may include clay, cloth and paint to create some cool finished pieces of art.

10. Fashion Diva                                                             Grades 3rd - 6th

      Do you love designing and drawing clothes? This class will be all about fashion. We will make a "fashion portfolio" of work in our own sketchbook. We will also be creating, recycling and making a new shirt from an old one, and we will also make a few fashion accessories!

 

11. Scrabble Tile Pendant and Mixed Media Collage                Grades 3rd - 6th

       Dates:             Monday thru Thursday June 27 - 30
      Time:              3 - 3:50 p.m.

      We will be making a really fun and super cute necklace recycling a scrabble tile and using a lot of creativity! We will also be creating a mixed media collage using a variety of paintin techniques, some stamping with houshold items, and adding some stamping, glitter and 3-D elements! This will be a fun class. 

12. Sun Prints                       Cancelled                                           Grades 5th - 12th

      We will be exploring this early form of photography by making prints and texture collages with the sun. Students will see their images develope on paper right before their eyes. Open to all levels of experience; students will be able to design and create their own works of art.

13. Photojournalism                     Cancelled                                      Grades 8th - 12th

       Dates:             Tuesday thru Friday, July 5 - 8
      Time:              1 - 3 p.m.

      We will learn how to support and enhance storytelling with photography. Students will have the opportunity to report current events in the Paris community through images, while honing their skills as photographers. Come dressed for walking in the heat! Open to all levels of photography experience. Bring your point-and-shoot digital camera.

**The projects created in Jordana Wright's classes will be on display at the Art Center on Friday, July 8th at 5:30pm for a short reception. Invite your families and friends to this reception to see your projects.

14. Native American Shield                                            Grades 2nd - 4th

       Dates:             Wednesday, July 6 & Friday, July 8
      Time:              10 - 11 a.m.   
      Instructor:       Alyssa Gordon

      Cost:               $10.00 Member & Non-Member

      Using brown craft paper, crayons, and the crayon resist process, students will create a Native American shield. The shield will be circular in shape and will use Native American symbols to tell a story about a tribe made up by the students. Students will then embellish their shields using yarn, feathers and beads.

15. Adinkra Symbol Print                                                  Grades 4th - 6th

       Dates:             Wednesday, July 6 & Friday, July 8
      Time:              11 - 12 noon   
      Instructor:       Alyssa Gordon

      Cost:               $10.00 Member & Non-Member

      Students will learn about the Akan people of West Africa and symbols they use called Adinkra symbols. They will create a print of the symbol that best describes them while learning about positive and negative shapes.

16. Create Your Own Comic Book                                     Grades 4th - 6th

       Dates:             Wednesday, July 6 & Friday, July 8
      Time:              1 - 2 p.m.   
      Instructor:       Alyssa Gordon

      Students will study different styles of comics and use colored markers or colored pencils to create a comic book of their own.

17. Japanese Brush Painting                                              Grades 4th - 6th

       Dates:             Wednesday, July 6 (One Day Only)
      Time:              2 - 3 p.m.   
      Instructor:       Alyssa Gordon

      Cost:               $5.00 Member & Non-Member

      Students will learn about Japanese brush painting and haiku poems. Students will create a brush painting of a Japanese symbol and write a haiku poem about that symbol.

18. Bottle Cap Art                                                             Grades 1st - 3rd

       Dates:             Thursday, July 14 (One Day Only)
      Time:              8 - 10 a.m.

      Create unique masterpieces with bottle caps of all shape, sizes and colors. The possibilities are endless!

19. Pop Art                                                                   Grades 3rd - 6th

      We will be using different types of paper, colors, textures and styles to make our own pop art sensations.

20. Upcycling Jewelry                                                       Grades 2nd - 6th

      Use everyday household items to create eye-catching jewelry. From magazines to ordinary tights, let the fashion divas unite!

21. Creating with Clay                   ***Full***                       Grades 3rd - 5th

       Dates:             Tuesday thru Friday, July 19 - 22 with an additional class on July 28, 1 - 2:30pm to glaze clay items

      This class will have students learning how to use clay to create animals, vases, wall pockets, and other items.

22. Advanced Drawing - A 10 Day Course                     Grades 5th and up

       Dates:             Monday thru Friday, July 25 - 29 and August 1 - 5
      Time:              10am - 12 noon

      Cost:               10 days = $80.00 Members/$85 Non-Members       5 days = $40.00 Members/$45.00 Non-Members

      This class will explore 10 different ways to draw with developement of skill and quickness. This class is for anyone who really loves to draw and wants to expand what they already know. The class will be busy-paced, focusing of drawing from life, but will also combine an encouragement of drawing from imagination and developing ideas. Maria would encourage you to participate in both weeks; however, if you are only able to take one week, that is fine.
